Topic: "She's Such a Geek"
Speaker: Kory Wells
Author and Director of Product Development, Specific Software Solutions
An essay by Kory Wells, director of product development for Brentwood-based Specific Software Solutions, leads the newly released book She's Such a Geek: Women Write About Science, Technology, and Other Nerdy Stuff. Published by Seal Press and edited by Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders, the anthology features writing by and about women who have lived, worked and played in traditionally male-dominated technical areas. Specific Software Solutions provides insurance and risk management professionals throughout the nation with software and services relating to workers compensation, loss forecasting, and more.
Ladies' Home Journal named She's Such a Geek to their "Books We Love" list in December 2006 and particularly noted Wells' "standout essay" that will "resonate with any woman, geek or not." In the essay framed by her childhood desire to be an astronaut, Wells writes about her mother's legacy of pursuing passions - even when they contradict traditional cultural roles.
Location: Bronte Bistro, basement Davis Kidd Bookstore in Green Hills Mall
