Small and large businesses rely on a variety of external providers for a range of services be they proprietary “internal” applications that are hosted outside a firm’s network perimeter at a cloud-hosted data center or contracted services with commercial entities that provide external, but key security architecture components from outsourced email filtering, to IPS/IDS/firewall monitoring, to Data Loss Prevention solutions. These arrangements are governed by vendor regulatory and industry standard requirements – for healthcare there is HIPAA/HITECH, for financial services there is GLBA, and for retail service firms transmitting cardholder data, there’s PCI, etc. In many cases business owners are left to answer hard questions on their own.
(ISC)² The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium is a non-profit organization which specializes in information security education and certifications. It has been described as “world’s largest IT security organization”.
